This Is Oulu

Once the world’s tar-trading superstar, Oulu is now a lively university and tech city… and somehow also the unofficial world capital of winter cycling. Yes, people really bike through snow like it’s totally normal.

In summer, Oulu fills up with beaches, festivals, music and wonderfully quirky events like the Air Guitar World Championships. In winter, things get even better (and bolder): imagine stepping straight from a hot sauna into an ice swim — the ultimate Nordic reset. It’s refreshing, surprisingly good for your health, and honestly… it might explain why Finland keeps being named the world’s happiest country.

Oulu is calm, creative, a little unexpected — and definitely worth discovering.

Ready to explore? Here are 10 things to do in Oulu.

1. Explore the Market Square and meet Toripolliisi

Start your visit at Oulu’s lively Market Square. In summer, this is where locals gather to enjoy ice cream, coffee and the warm seasonal atmosphere. You can grab something delicious from the market’s food stalls, relax nearby, and soak in the vibrant city life. Don’t forget to stop and greet the iconic Toripolliisi statue, one of Oulu’s most beloved landmarks and a perfect photo spot.

2. Enjoy the seaside at Nallikari Beach

Nallikari Beach, often called the “Riviera of the North,” is Oulu’s top summer destination. With its long sandy shore, seaside restaurats and beautiful walking paths, it’s the perfect place for swimming, relaxing and enjoying sunset views over the Bothnian Bay. The area is also known for its iconic lighthouse, one of Nallikari’s most recognisable landmarks.
In summer, Nallikari is especially popular with families, thanks to attractions like the small amusement park Vauhtipuisto and Finland’s travelling funfair. Nallikari Holiday Village offers a wide range of accommodation options, from stylish sea-view apartments and modern villas to traditional holiday cottages and a camping site right next to the beach. Many of the well-equipped stays are also pet-friendly and located just steps from the shore.

There is something to do for visitors of all ages: rent outdoor equipment year-round at Nallikari Safaris or simply enjoy the variety of restaurants in the area. The seaside Restaurant Nallikari is perfect for a buffet, à la carte dinner or weekend brunch, while Bistoria Patio delights guests with Italian flavours and a sunny terrace atmosphere. In winter, the frozen sea transforms into a magical playground. Visitors can go ice skating, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, or simply enjoy the unique Arctic atmosphere right on the ice. With its kilometre-long beach and excellent services, Nallikari guarantees a memorable holiday in every season.

3. Discover Hailuoto Island and other nearby destinations

For a memorable day trip, take a short ferry ride to Hailuoto Island, known for its peaceful nature, sand dunes and authentic island atmosphere.

In summer, the island is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy local flavours. Stop by Hailuodon Panimo, a charming organic brewery located in an old warehouse building in the village. Visitors can explore the brewery, taste locally brewed organic beers, and relax with a drink in the cozy pub or on the spacious sunny terrace.
Food lovers shouldn’t miss Kujala’s Burger, a popular street food truck serving artisan burgers made from the farm’s own pasture-raised beef. You can enjoy a delicious bite in Marjaniemi during the summer or spot the truck at local events.
For those who wish to stay overnight, Luovo Hotel offers stylish accommodation in the historic pilot station area of Marjaniemi. The hotel features 20 beautifully designed rooms, an atmospheric on-site restaurant, and breakfast included – an ideal base for experiencing the island’s unique charm.

Oulu is also a great starting point for exploring nearby coastal destinations and road trip routes, such as the scenic Pohjola Route, often described as “Finland in miniature.” Along the way, you’ll discover archipelago landscapes, sandy beaches, forests and national parks, as well as charming towns like Old Raahe and Old Ii. Hailuoto is just one of the many northern gems that make it easy to combine city life with unforgettable nature experiences.

5. Experience Oulu’s cycling culture

Oulu is one of Europe’s best cycling cities. Rent a bike and explore the city like a local – along rivers, parks and scenic routes that connect neighbourhoods, nature and the coastline. With its extensive network of well-maintained bike paths, cycling is not only convenient but also one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Oulu’s relaxed rhythm.

Oulu’s cycling network links all districts and even reaches beyond the city, making it easy to get around quickly. In fact, many routes work as shortcuts, and it’s often faster to reach places by bike than by car – sometimes without stopping at a single traffic light.
The city is known for keeping its bike lanes in excellent condition all year round, which is why cycling is a natural part of everyday life in every season. The busiest routes are the cycling “highways,” wide red-asphalt lanes designed for smooth and efficient travel. Beyond the urban paths, forest trails and coastal routes offer ever-changing landscapes – from salty sea air to fresh pine woods and open fields under the wide northern sky.
With around 900 kilometres of cycling paths, Oulu truly is a bike-friendly destination where exploring on two wheels feels effortless, fun and uniquely local.

6. Discover Sauna the Oulu way

In Oulu, sauna isn’t just a tradition — it’s a lifestyle with a splash of northern attitude. Float down the river on a steaming sauna raft, sweat it out by the sea, or sink your toes into Hailuoto sand between sessions. Wherever you steam, chill, or dip, one thing’s certain — Oulu knows how to turn up the heat in true Finnish style.

Experience authentic Finnish sauna culture in Oulu, where northern charm and wellbeing go hand in hand. With nearly three million saunas across Finland, this cherished tradition is part of everyday life — a moment to pause, breathe, and feel the warmth. Whether you’re staying by the sea or in the heart of the city, many accommodations and hotels in Oulu offer private or shared saunas, giving you the perfect chance to unwind and relax like a true Finn.

Oulu gives sauna culture a playful twist. Here, you can drift down the Oulujoki River in a floating sauna or steam by the sea at the Market Square. Each spot has its own personality — some rustic, some a bit wild — but all share the same heart: warmth, equality, and a good dose of Finnish calm.
Whether you plunge into icy water after a steamy session or sip something cold under the midnight sun, Oulu’s sauna moments will leave you glowing (and maybe just a little addicted to löyly).

Evening walks, outdoor terraces and festivals feel extra magical under the glowing northern sky. Many of Oulu’s beaches and waterfront spots are still buzzing with happy people late in the evening, enjoying the warmth, the sea air and the endless summer atmosphere. These long, luminous nights create a truly special feeling that visitors often remember as one of the highlights of northern Finland.
