Market Square vibes and the buzz of Rotuaari

Start your day in the heart of Oulu’s city center at the Market Square. In summer, you can enjoy coffee and local treats at the market cafés while stopping by to greet the historic Toripolliisi statue. The square is surrounded by charming red wooden stalls selling handicrafts and local products. Be sure to visit the beautiful historic Market Hall as well. Its café serves year-round, and the old building has a special atmosphere—especially during Christmas. You can try the traditional Oulu dish rössypottu at the Market Hall café on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You’ll also find Oulu Tourist Information inside the Market Hall.

From the square, it’s just a short walk to Rotuaari, Oulu’s lively pedestrian street. Around Rotuaari, you’ll find some of the city’s best shopping spots, including Valkea Shopping Centre, as well as numerous restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy a delicious lunch. Consider stopping by the charming Restaurant Puistola or the Parisian-style Restaurant Alfred.

Oulu Art Museum and the lush Hupisaaret City Park

Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026, so even on a short visit, it’s worth exploring the city’s cultural offerings. Head to the Oulu Art Museum, where you can discover fascinating exhibitions and be inspired by works from local and international artists. Thanks to its rotating exhibitions, there’s always something new to see.

The museum is within walking distance from the Market Square and Rotuaari. On your way, you can admire Oulu City Hall and the nearby Ajan kulku (The Passage of Time) sculpture, which offers a glimpse into the city’s history.

Right next to the museum, you’ll find the beautiful Ainola Park and Hupisaaret islands, home to the iconic giant OULU letters. This lush park is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, with small streams and canals creating a charming atmosphere. The area offers scenic views of the Oulujoki river delta. In summer, you can also visit the botanical garden and stop for coffee or ice cream at the lovely Café Kiikku.

The idyllic old town of Pikisaari

Continue from Ainola Park toward the historic Pikisaari district. On the way, you can stop at Linnansaari to admire the pink old seamen’s school, Tähtitorni (the Observatory Tower). Built in 1875 based on designs by Wolmar Westling and serving as a summer café since 1912, it originally functioned as a training and observation tower for maritime students. During summer, the castle cellar hosts an exhibition on the site’s history.

Continue to the idyllic wooden old town of Pikisaari! This historic industrial area is tied to Oulu’s shipbuilding and tar heritage—ships were built here as early as the 17th century, and later tar products were produced in what was once the “tar capital.” Stop by one of the island’s excellent restaurants, such as Hailuoto Brewery’s Restaurant Mallassauna, where you can also enjoy a relaxing sauna experience.

Nallikari: Oulu’s seaside gem

End your day in Nallikari, where you can experience Oulu’s maritime charm at its best. Nallikari is known for its beautiful sandy beach, iconic lighthouse, and some of the most stunning sunsets in the city. The area is surrounded by pleasant nature trails with birdwatching towers and campfire spots.

If you have time, rent a fatbike, SUP board, or kayak from Nallikari Safaris—or in winter, try snow kickers or ice fishing gear. Enjoy a high-quality dinner with a sea view at Restaurant Nallikari or taste some of the city’s best artisan pizzas at Bistoria Patio.
