2. Bootti – a sun deck on a restaurant ship
Next to the theatre, in Vänmanninsaari, floats Oulu’s own restaurant ship, Bootti. The ship’s sun deck holds 150 guests, and on the mainland side there’s a large terrace and event tent. Every day the menu features a North Ostrobothnian classic, salmon soup with archipelago bread – plus cocktails, mocktails and specialty coffees. In summer 2026, Bootti also took over the Nallikari lighthouse: Bootti’s Lighthouse summer terrace opened on the beach in June.

Oulu’s newest brewery restaurant, Varikko, opened its doors in an old depot building in Hartaanranta, and the sun shines on its large terrace for most of the day. The taps pour around twenty house-made drinks: beers as well as the brewery’s flavoured long drinks and lemonades. No need to go hungry either – the kitchen serves house-made pizzas and salads from scratch, with lunch also available on weekdays.

An idyllic early-1900s wooden-house setting on the banks of the Oulu River has charmed locals since 1920. Koivurannan kahvila calls itself Oulu’s sunniest terrace – and not without reason. On the terrace of Koitelin Tunnelmatupa, summer takes its time. The mind settles as you watch the Kiiminkijoki river flow by, sunlight filtering through the tall pines. Hailuoto Brewery’s Mallassauna is a miracle in Pikisaari: soft sand has been brought from Hailuoto to the courtyard of a malt house built in 1869, and beside the terrace two free yard saunas keep warm – bring your own swimwear and towel! The taps offer more than a dozen organic beers and specialities from Oulu-area breweries, and the plates feature flammkuchen and malt bread, among other things.
