What’s on in Oulu in autumn 2026? Autumn in the European Capital of Culture year shows why northern darkness is an experience rather than an obstacle. From September to November, Oulu tastes, dances, reads – and finally the whole city is lit up by the glow of light festivals. We’ve gathered the season’s most interesting events – the line-up includes Oulu Days, the Irish Festival, Arctic Food Tasting, the Oulu Book Fair and the Lumo Light Festival. Event picks for September in Oulu

Sirkka Ballet 3–5 Sep | Cultural Centre Valve

A dark new ballet by production group Tenho tells the story of a woman caught between conflicting pressures, with war and climate change looming in the background. Oulu Days 5–7 Sep | all around the city

The city festival fills Oulu with dozens of programme items in the centre and the neighbourhoods. Expect abseiling down the Intiö water tower, a city escape game, park cinema, nature walks and community singing. Most of the programme is free.

First Date at the Stadium Sat 5 Sep, 5 pm | OTC Stadion, Heinäpää

Oulu's brand-new football stadium opens to the public with a grand opening concert – featuring BESS, Apulanta and Vesterinen – ahead of the first match. Rising in the Heinäpää district, OTC Stadion holds around 5,000 spectators for football and roughly 9,000 for concerts, and will be the home ground of AC Oulu.

Misty Golden Night Sat 5 Sep | Radisson Blu Oulu

A charming burlesque evening combining a show and dinner: glamour, humour and a delicious menu for one night only. A perfect pick if you're after something out of the ordinary for an autumn night out.

Arctic Food Tasting 23–26 Sep | restaurants across Oulu

Oulu's restaurants and cafés compete for the tastiest dish – and the audience picks the winner. Sweet tasting portions cost €5 and savoury ones €7, so you can eat your way across the whole city in a single weekend. The dishes favour ingredients from Arctic Food Lab network producers and other products from the Oulu2026 region. The event is part of the Arctic Food Lab programme.

The Irish Festival of Oulu 23–27 Sep | Oulu city centre

The world's northernmost Irish festival is held for the 19th time, and in the Capital of Culture year its programme is the biggest ever. Expect Irish music and dance, plus the brand-new Cultural Kaleidoscopes street festival that brings cultures out onto the streets for everyone to see.

Event picks for October in Oulu

Oulu Book Fair 9–11 Oct | Oulu Lyseo & the Provincial Government Building

Organised by the Oulu Writers' Association, the Book Fair takes over the city for the third time, and the 2026 theme is North – northern subjects, authors, phenomena and landscapes. The programme features new book launches, author interviews and themed discussions covering novels, non-fiction, poetry, comics and children's and young adult literature.

The Kuutar Garden 18 Sep – 30 Nov | Kivisydän

Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen's immersive media art exhibition transforms part of Oulu's underground Kivisydän car park into a virtual world where past and future meet through plants, nature and human-gathered knowledge. The exhibition can be experienced from 18 September to 30 November in Kivisydän. One of the most anticipated works of the Oulu2026 autumn – tickets go on sale in August. Faravid's Land 26 Aug – 12 Dec | Raksila market hall

An immersive large-scale production by Oulu Theatre and Flow Productions takes over an empty supermarket, where theatre, dance and circus create a mythical past for Oulu and the North. Museum and Science Centre Tiima opens 9 Oct | Åström area, Oulu

October's biggest news is the brand-new Museum and Science Centre Tiima, opening its doors on 9 October 2026 on the site of the old Åström leather factory. At roughly €36 million, it is one of the largest cultural investments in Oulu's history, bringing Science Centre Tietomaa, the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, the VISIO experience space and the Children's Museum under one roof. Among the opening exhibitions, look out for Metallikausi, which dives into the history of Northern Finnish metal music – ice, darkness, solitude and melancholy from the 1980s onwards – and Aurora Revelare, an exhibition on the northern lights opening at Tietomaa in October. Tiima is the season's safest bet for a rainy day and for families. 💡 Coincidence or not: Tiima opens on the very day the Oulu Book Fair begins – making the second weekend of October exceptionally culture-packed in Oulu.

Oulu International Children's and Youth Film Festival 9–15 Nov | Cultural Centre Valve

The Nordic countries' leading festival of films for children and young people is held for the 45th time. The programme features over a hundred films from around the world, and the festival is an excellent reason to bring the whole family into town for a November week.

Beyond the Sky 19–21 Nov | Oulu Hall

In November, the darkness meets the universe. Oulu Sinfonia's Beyond the Sky is an immersive concert experience where Oulu-based astrophotographer Jukka-Pekka Metsävainio's images and animations of distant nebulae merge with a new composition by Lauri Porra. Lumo Art & Tech 13–22 Nov | Oulu

A brand-new ten-day international festival brings art and technology together. The programme features seminars and conferences for professionals as well as immersive public exhibitions combining light, sound, digital and media art. The festival invites digital art and technology creators to Oulu from around the world. The light festival beloved by locals crowns the Lumo Art & Tech weeks, as light artworks take over the darkening city and reveal its hidden secrets. The event is free and made for the whole family – November in the North isn't dark after all.

Autumn event picks from around Oulu

Tyrnävä Potato Market Sat 26 Sep, 9 am – 4 pm | Kunnankuja, Tyrnävä

Tyrnävä is known for its pure potatoes, and the Potato Market began as the area's harvest festival. Over the years it has grown into a market event drawing more than 10,000 visitors, selling local potatoes, food and crafts. Organised by Lions Club Tyrnävä, the event raises funds for charity. Tickets €8, free for under-12s – the ticket includes a 2 kg bag of potatoes and parking. Just half an hour's drive from Oulu.

European Owl Festival 2–4 Oct | Liminganlahti Nature Centre, Liminka

Combining science, art and owls, this festival gathers birdwatchers, families, photographers and nature lovers in Liminka from across Europe. The main venue is the Liminganlahti Nature Centre, set in one of Europe's most significant bird wetlands, with additional programme in Liminka centre. Just half an hour's drive from Oulu.

Light into Darkness: Marrastulet 20–21 Nov | Köykkyri, Kempele

November's darkest weekend is given over to light outside Oulu too. At the Marrastulet light art event, the Köykkyri outdoor recreation area in Kempele turns into an experiential trail of light artworks combining light, music and installations. The series explores darkness, community, hope and the landscape of the Liminka plains, with the works drawing on local stories and legends. Only about a 20-minute drive from Oulu!

When should you visit Oulu in autumn 2026?

If you’re picking one weekend, 23–27 September is a strong choice: the Irish Festival of Oulu and Arctic Food Tasting overlap, giving you music, dance and food on the same trip. And 19–22 November is the most visual weekend of the season, when the Lumo Light Festival lights up the city.
