Easy Day Trips from the City
Oulu is an excellent base for short winter excursions. Nature, coastal landscapes and small local destinations are all close by and easy to reach — even on a long weekend.
Hailuoto Island
Just a short ferry ride from the mainland, Hailuoto is the largest island in the Bothnian Bay. In winter, the island offers frozen sea views, quiet coastal scenery and the atmospheric fishing village of Marjaniemi with its historic lighthouse. A visit can be combined with a stop at Hailuoto Brewery, where you can get to know local craft beers inspired by the island’s maritime character and northern seasons.
Nature close to the city
Several easy outdoor destinations are located just minutes from the city centre. Hupisaaret City Park offers snowy river paths and bridges right next to downtown, while Hietasaari and Nallikari provide access to walking trails, campfire sites and the frozen sea. Along the coast, winter trails and viewpoints open towards the snow-covered Bothnian Bay.
Forests, rapids and winter trails
For a slightly longer day trip, destinations such as Koiteli Rapids, Sanginjoki Nature Reserve and Pilpasuo are all within easy reach of Oulu. Marked winter trails, forest landscapes and campfire spots make them ideal for snowshoeing, skiing or a peaceful walk in nature.
All day trips from Oulu are simple to arrange, with short distances and good local services — easy to fit into a winter city break.
For those travelling by car, Oulu is also a natural stop along the Pohjola Route, a scenic winter road trip route showcasing the frozen sea, archipelago, forests and northern countryside.
