How Oulu Does Darkness

How Oulu does darkness – a guide to the dark season

Oulu sits on the Gulf of Bothnia, about 170 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. From November to January the days are short and the evenings long. People here don’t hide from the dark. They have a whole routine for it, and this year Europe’s Capital of Culture adds light art, Björk and a symphony made of nebulae.

How dark does it actually get?

Oulu is just south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun rises every day of the year, even in December. It only stays a few hours. Slide through the year to see how much daylight there is.

1Escape the dark into the sauna

The first rule of an Oulu winter. Darkness feels very different at 80 degrees, and many of the city’s public saunas float on the water, so cooling off means a dip in the river or the sea.

    4Head out anyway

Dim nature calms the mind. Nallikari beach is quiet and beautiful in autumn, and a path along the shore takes you to the nature trails of Hietasaari. Bring a head torch. Once the sea freezes, usually after New Year, you can walk, ski and go ice fishing on it with a local guide.

Nallikari beach in Oulu in late autumn

    Nallikari

A long sandy beach about five kilometres from the centre. In autumn you have the shore almost to yourself, with the wind, the waves and the low light changing over the sea. The holiday village is open all year.

    Northern lights over Oulu

    Northern lights

You can see the northern lights in Oulu surprisingly often. Good spots for aurora watching include Nallikari and Koiteli. Guided northern lights trips are run by, among others, Northfolk and Majakka Outdoors.

Loppula in the Sanginjoki nature reserve in Oulu

    Sanginjoki

A nature reserve about half an hour’s drive from the centre, with some 40 km of easy trails. The accessible Loppula trail follows the river, and the Loppula nature café is open at weekends.

5Long dinners by candlelight – or comfort food for the dark season

A dark evening is the perfect excuse to stay at the table a little longer. Sometimes that means several courses and a wine list, sometimes a proper burger or a plate of wings. Both work.

    6Plan your trip

Most visitors spend two or three days in Oulu. That’s enough for two saunas, one long walk by the sea, an evening of light art and a museum day.

    Day 1

Market Square, Tiima and an evening at Lumo.

    Day 2

Nallikari and Hietasaari, then a sauna by the market square.

    Day 3

Björk at Pekuri, a long lunch and one more sauna.

    Getting to Oulu

From Sweden and Norway: since August 2026, trains run again from Haparanda via Tornio and Kemi to Oulu. By car, Oulu is an easy drive down the coast.

From elsewhere: fly to Oulu via Helsinki. The flight from Helsinki takes about an hour.

    How do you do darkness?

Oulu works surprisingly well for a trip even in the November dark. This year the light comes from Lumo, Björk, Beyond the Sky and more. Tell us how you survive – or enjoy – the dark season: share your moment from Oulu on Instagram and tag us.
