Oulu Autumn 2026 – 10 Tips: Experience These Events, Adventures, and Nature Spots in Oulu This Autumn!

1. Autumn is full of Oulu2026 magic – the Capital of Culture year continues at full speed

September kicks off with a bang: Oulun Päivät (Oulu Days, 4–6 Sept) fills the city with dozens of largely free programme items, from water-tower rappelling to park movie nights, and the same weekend sees the brand-new OTC football stadium in Heinäpää open to the public with an opening concert. At the Valve Cultural Centre, 3–5 September brings the new Tenho Ballet production Sirkka, which was nearly sold out a full six months before its premiere.

Toward the end of September, it’s worth setting aside a weekend for two fronts at once: Makuseikkailu – Arctic Food Tasting (23–26 Sept) takes visitors around Oulu’s restaurants to sample northern flavours, while at the same time The Irish Festival of Oulu (23–27 Sept) celebrates its 19th edition with the biggest programme of the anniversary year — including the brand-new Cultural Kaleidoscopes street festival. From September through the end of November (18 Sept–30 Nov), Kivisydän will also host Kuuttaren puutarha (Garden of the Moon Maiden), an immersive media artwork by Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen that transforms part of the parking hall into a virtual world.

Throughout the autumn, Faravid’s Land — an immersive large-scale production by Oulu Theatre and Flow Productions — will also be running in the empty Raksila market hall, with performances continuing all the way into December.

In October, the Oulu Book Fair (9–11 Oct) brings authors and literature lovers to the city under the theme “The North.”

November brings the visual highlight of the autumn: Beyond the Sky (19–21 Nov) brings a world premiere to Ouluhalli, combining the works of astrophotographer J-P Metsävainio with music by Lauri Porra, while the four-day Lumo Art & Tech festival (19–22 Nov) takes over the city with light, sound, and media art. The Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival (9–15 Nov), aimed at families, fills the Valve Cultural Centre with over a hundred films.

Oulu offers plenty of options for indulging, combining northern ingredients, international influences, and a relaxed atmosphere. The city has cosy dinner restaurants, traditional North Ostrobothnian cuisine, and seaside terraces alike.

In the city centre, Alfred Kitchen & Bar combines international flavours in a modern way with a seasonally changing menu, while Restaurant Puistola charms from breakfast to dinner with dishes made from local ingredients. Kurkela Lounge & Dine serves high-quality dishes made from local ingredients alongside a strong wine and cocktail list, in the ever-charming Pikisaari, just a stone’s throw from the city centre.
