Oulu is known as the easy-going city of the north, where nobody is in a hurry to get anywhere. Here you can linger over a coffee for as long as it feels right, watch the river flow past your hotel window while breakfast stretches into late morning, and end a forest walk in a warm log cabin. We’ve rounded up Oulu’s most atmospheric places, where time seems to move a little slower and leaving always feels a little too soon.

Cafés that invite you to stay
From historic villas to seaside harbours and leafy parks, Oulu’s cafés come with a view and a story. Finns are among the world’s biggest coffee drinkers, so a refill is never a strange request.

Hostel Cafe Huvila – a villa with a past
On the Toppilansalmi waterfront, a villa built in 1856 for a malt beverage factory has been lovingly restored into a café and hostel. Homemade cakes, weekday lunch and weekend brunch taste even better by the old windows — and if you can’t bring yourself to leave, you can stay the night.

Puistola – a taste of Central Europe
Puistola brings a touch of Central European café culture to the heart of Oulu. Treats from its own bakery invite you to linger, and when coffee turns into dinner, you don’t even need to move. On Saturdays, the day starts with breakfast.

Seelari – the sea in every window
At a sailing harbour on Hietasaari island, just a few minutes from the centre, Seelari serves coffee with a view of the Baltic Sea. On Wednesdays and Sundays the sauna is heated too: coffee, sauna, more coffee — the Finnish way.

Kahvila Kiikku – a living room in the park
A greenhouse café in the middle of Hupisaaret, Oulu’s loveliest city park. Usually a summer favourite, Kiikku stays open at weekends until the end of November this year — autumn colours through the glass walls, a warm cup in your hands. Dogs welcome.

Dinner, the Oulu way – unhurried evenings and northern flavours
In Oulu, dinner is never rushed. Enjoy a glass of good wine among the wooden houses of Pikisaari, or let a five-course surprise menu take you on a journey through northern nature. Book a table, bring good company and let the evening stretch.

Kurkela Lounge & Dine – wine on Pikisaari
Among the wooden houses of Pikisaari island, Kurkela is a place where good wine, food and company come together. A seasonal menu and a carefully chosen wine list make it easy to stay for one more glass. Pikisaari is a short walk from the centre across the bridge.

Oula Kitchen & Bar – a long northern dinner
At Lapland Hotels Oulu, restaurant Oula pays tribute to the diverse nature of the North. Its five-course surprise menu brings flavours from the fells, mires and forests to your plate — every course a small surprise. Set aside plenty of time; that’s the whole point.

Stays where time slows down
Sometimes the best way to stay a little longer is to stay the night. In these places, the setting is half the holiday — whether it’s a river, the sea or the northern forest.

Nordic Art Hotel Lasaretti – art by the river
Set in a courtyard of historic buildings by the Oulujoki river and Ainola Park, Lasaretti is an art hotel in every sense: art fills the rooms, the corridors and the yard. Wake up to river views, and walk to the city centre through the park.

Villa Uleå – villa life by the sea
On Hietasaari island, right by the sea in the Oulujoki delta, Villa Uleå’s modern villas carry on the island’s long villa tradition. Travelling as a group? Book the sauna yard with three saunas, a hot tub and a campfire spot.

Taiga Resort – at home in nature
On the banks of the Kiiminkijoki river, just a 15-minute drive from the city centre, Taiga Resort offers a homely stay in the peace of nature. Evenings drift by in the riverside sauna and hot tub, and guided trips take you snowshoeing, hiking or chasing the northern lights.

Hotel Liminganlahti – wake up to birdsong
An eight-room nature hotel on the edge of Liminka Bay, Finland’s most famous bird wetland. The nature centre and a café-restaurant are in the same yard, so the trails start right at your door.

Steam and stillness – saunas and recovery
In Oulu, sauna usually comes with water: a dip in the river or the sea is part of the ritual, whatever the season. And for the ultimate slow moment, try floating in total darkness.

Olosauna – a floating village sauna
Floating at the river mouth, Olosauna combines authentic Finnish sauna culture with modern architecture. Your ticket includes a dip in the river all year round — through a hole in the ice in winter — and a café to linger in afterwards. All you need is a swimsuit.

Lainesauna – a sauna raft on the river
A wood-fired sauna, a hot tub and, in winter, an ice hole, floating on the Oulujoki river. Join a public session or rent the whole raft for your group.

Koivuranta sauna raft – classic wood-fired steam
On the Oulujoki riverbank in Värttö, this sauna raft offers a traditional wood-fired sauna, an ice hole and an outdoor hot tub. Book a public session in advance, or rent the raft for your group.

Rentouttava Laine – floating in darkness
In the heart of Oulu, try Northern Finland’s only black float tank. Floating in the dark, time seems to disappear altogether — and afterwards, you can unwind in your own private lounge.

Bastu Sauna – steam in the city centre
In summer 2026, Oulu’s newest sauna raft, Hehku, floated in to the Market Square waterfront. Book your session online, take a dip in the sea from the pier between rounds, and enjoy the city lights right next door. Open all year round.

Art, galleries and culture – lose track of time
In galleries and museums, time loses its meaning. In the Myllytulli district, the art museum and Tiima are just a short walk apart, and on Hallituskatu, you could gaze at astrophotographer J-P Metsävainio’s stunning works forever.

Oulu Museum of Art – art from the North
In a charming red-brick building next to Hupisaaret city park, the art museum showcases contemporary art and northern visual culture. Exhibitions change regularly, and a stroll in the park is the perfect way to round off your visit.

Tiima – museum and science centre in one
Opened in October 2026 in a restored leather-factory area, Tiima brings together seven exhibitions, an immersive journey through space and a viewing lift up an old water tower. One ticket easily fills a whole day — no need to be a kid to get excited.

Culture House Valve – galleries and encounters
In the city centre, Valve brings art, exhibitions, performances and festivals together under one roof. Combine it with the JiiPee.art Showroom, just down the same street.

Slow down in nature
From the city centre, you’re less than half an hour from old forest, river rapids or a bird wetland — and many trips end at a cosy café.

Sanginjoki and Loppula nature café
About 20 km from the centre, the old forests, bogs and riverside trails of Sanginjoki invite you to explore. Along the trails, a former forester’s log house serves coffee, fresh bakes and craft beer. Mostly open at weekends.

Koiteli rapids – bridges, islands and pancakes
About 25 km from the centre, suspension bridges lead you from island to island over the rushing Koiteli rapids. Stop at a campfire spot for a picnic, and in summer, try the island café’s famous homemade oven pancake.

Liminka Bay – where the birds rest
Finland’s most famous bird wetland, where migrating birds stop to rest every spring and autumn. Trails start from the nature centre, which also has a hotel and a café-restaurant.

Linnunradan Tila – alpaca company
At this small farm in Kempele, just south of Oulu, you can slow down in the cheerful company of alpacas. A sauna cabin for two at the forest edge is open all year round, a pop-up café opens now and then — for example during school holidays — and alpaca walks can be booked in advance.
