Oulu River Valley Terva Trail

The Oulu River Valley Terva Trail introduces hikers to the cultural history of the Oulu River Valley while telling the story of the area’s most significant transported commodity, tar. The information boards along the hiking route explain how tar once ended up from the forests of Kainuu to Oulu and from there to the world. Additionally, you will learn about the area’s geo-history, whitewater rafting traditions, natural values, power plant construction, and the history of the Oulu River salmon.

The hiking route is naturally very diverse; you travel through lush forests, open fields, vast swamps, riverbanks, and pine forests. Along the way, there are over 10 lean-tos and one wilderness hut with saunas. The route also passes near the village centers of Muhos and Utajärvi. The route can be traveled from Oulu’s Sankivaara to Rokua (as in this description example) or vice versa. The trail can also be traveled in shorter sections. The Terva Trail is marked with orange wooden posts bearing an image of a tar boat.
